Magic

To understand how magic works in the Cycle universe, it's necessary to understand how the planet works. The planet has a life's blood, a pulsing thrum of energy that flows beneath the surface. It swells from the crust in the form of creatures, weather patterns, volcanic eruptions, plants, ad infinatum. It as also within every mage and non-mage on the planet. What makes a mage special is nothing more than a skill learned. Some are gifted in it, others taught and possessing of a humble amount of skill, but the skill itself remains the same. To be a mage is to tap into the protrusion of life energy within oneself and using ones own thoughts to give it form. A mage's magic, therefore, is limited in two aspects: the amount of life energy they themselves possess, and the amount of concentration they can muster to control it. The effects of magic are limited only by the mage's imagination and the extent of their own life-force. Though rare, it's possible to focus so intently on the outcome of a spell that a mage could cause his or her own death. Thus, training and restraint is necessary before one is left to their own devices. Normally it takes years of training and concentration for an average person to learn magic, but those born with the talent catch on much more quickly, as it comes more naturally to them. |
